This week, I was assigned to shoot a photo using fill flash. It is the first time we have been allowed and encouraged to use flash this whole semester, so I was excited. I decided to use my mom as a model because she was visiting campus. I think the hardest part was constructing the photo to ensure that a difference could be seen with and without the flash. I took my mom to the SMU Law Quad because I knew the quad had good lighting.
I had my mom take photos in different areas of the law quad. I had to adjust both the exposure and my position when taking the photo because she was frequently over exposed. Towards the end of our shoot, I decided to position her at a table that was semi-shaded. The shade darkened some of her features, but the fill flashed corrected it.
The flash lighted up my mom’s forehead and got rid of most of the shadows. I do think that it kind of washed her out in some areas. What I didn’t consider was my mom’s glasses. The flash can be seen in her glasses. If I had saw it earlier when I was shooting, I would have retaken the photo.
