SMU Engage Dallas #1Day4Dallas

Writer: Jordyn HarrellJordyn Harrell

Engage Dallas hosted its annual Residential Fall Day of Service October 16, 2021.

Engage Dallas is a place-based community engagement initiative that was launched Fall 2020. Students are able to work with community partners through their residential commons. Each common targets a specific need in the South and West Dallas areas.

The goal of the Engage Dallas initiative is to provide these communities with long-term service. For example, Mary Hay/Peyton/Shuttles (MHPS) Commons is committed to addressing the community need of immigration and refugee support.

Over 100 students attended #1Day4Dallas. The event provided the opportunity for the 11 residential commons to come together and serve at eight different service sites.

Students are more encouraged to be involved in the community since the switch over to the Common Curriculum, which has made Community Engagement a graduation requirement for students who enter SMU Fall 2020 and after. Engage Dallas provides opportunities for students to not only serve but learn why it is important to serve their Dallas community.
