SMU transitioned from the University Curriculum to the Common Curriculum Fall 2020. This new curriculum applies to students who entered the University during Fall 2020 and later.

The change was proposed by the General Education Task Force, which consists of the Faculty Council, two students, alumni, and some stakeholders. It was then voted on by the full faculty and the Board of Trustees.

Dayna Oshcerwitz, Assistant Provost of General Education, said that the goal of this new curriculum is to help students be successful beyond the university-level.

This curriculum also requires students to complete specific proficiencies in order to graduate. These proficiencies are meant to cultivate skills employers are looking for. One of these requirements is Community Engagement.

Students are required to complete 10-20 hours of Community Engagement. Community Engagement takes it a step further than community service. Students are expected to serve a defined need in the community. There are many on-campus opportunities to help them accomplish this. The hope is that students will become more cognitive and intentional about why they serve, and encourage students to be active citizens.
