I had a lot of fun shooting this week’s assignment. I visited my brother this weekend and took advantage of my young, energetic nieces and nephews. The bunch was great subjects and could care less about me weaving in and out of their game to take photos. Our photo shoot was initially inside, but the lighting and space proved to be a challenge.

My oldest nephew Isaac was first playing indoor basketball in his room. His room had great lighting—the blinds were open, and it was super sunny outside)—and I think I took some good shots. It’s just that I had a limited amount places to position myself to take the photo. Depending on where I stood (or kneeled), either the ball was out of frame or Isaac’s feet. I also couldn’t capture the goal in the frame. I then tried to take a picture of his sisters who were dancing and playing volleyball in the living room. That room had less natural light and the artificial light made them look really yellow. That’s when I decided to take the kids outside.

Isaac and one of his older sisters, Angelica, played a game of basketball in the driveway. I spent some time chasing them up and down the pavement with my camera and running to get stray balls out of the street. The weather fluctuated a lot (it would be sunny and cloudy and then sunny again), so I had to keep adjusting my exposure. I think something I need to work on more is positioning myself to take the photos. In some photos, a foot or an arm were out of frame.
