This assignment challenged me in ways that I did not consider. I felt like I had a chance to learn more about how the aperture, ISO, and shutter speed interact with one another with the amount of adjusting I had to do. But I am no way near to being a pro at it. The amount of time it takes me to make sure the photo is correctly lighted frustrates me because I feel like I am missing out on good shots.
For me, the hardest part of this assignment was finding people to take pictures of, which is weird because I live on a college campus. But I guess, more people than I thought left for the Labor Day weekend.
I took the picture of the construction workers Saturday afternoon after trekking across campus in the heat for an hour in search of humans. I liked how the people were constantly in motion and loved how shaded the area was. I did feel a little awkward standing off to side on the pavement snapping countless pictures, but thankfully, they did not pay me any mind. My difficulties with this shot were getting the camera to focus and how long it took me to fix the camera settings. My camera was set to auto focus, but I feel like the image could’ve been sharper.
Because of how hard it was for me to find people, I had to switch my tactics for my direct light photo. I camped outside the Highland Park United Methodist Church near the garage Sunday morning because I was guaranteed to see people pass by. The sunny lighting was a bit tricky. I figured out how to get the glare off the car that was initially in the shot by adjusting the “holy trinities” (before I later decided to crop it out). What I could not figure out was how to get rid of the golden hexagon that was in my photo.
Taking a photo in artificial lighting was the easiest because stores are usually filled with people. I did not feel rush adjusting my camera settings. I think the hard part was being comfortable taking pictures of random people. I am not a fan of the shot I posted, but I do think it captured the lighting really well. I do wish I took a photo of a man who had his dog in his Target basket, but I missed it because I hesitated.
